Your Body is your Investment Portfolio

I ask myself what are the most important things in life? They can be simple pleasures like living comfortably and close to nature, enjoying the company or conversation with family and friends, sitting in the warm sun, and laughing and drinking beer/wine. While I do need to have an income to sustain this lifestyle, but more importantly I need a clean and healthy body. This has led me to learn more about living a healthy lifestyle. The realization came after my son’s 10th birthday, and up to this time, I have been working 12 to 16 hours a day in my house flipping business while keeping my W2 job. It was stressful and I was gaining weight. I exercised and even got back on my road bike…with little results. I get tired after work, and I put on weights and my energy level was sinking.

Then I hear about the ketogenic diet from a friend, and it works wonders. I dropped eating as many carbs I can… growing up in an Asian family it’s not an easy thing to do and I crave rice and noodle. But once I started, I dropped weight and my mind is less foggy especially after meals. I also began to pay more attention and listen to podcasts about improving my quality of life so I can live longer and healthier. I learned that Yoga works wonders to put the right amount of stress on the body and help with breathing. I plan to sign up for the Yoga zoom online class as soon as I finished with the remodel/move, and I am in the middle of reading “Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art” by James Nestor. Another lesson I learned from a friend is intermittent fasting which can trigger autophagy that can help the body clean up the damaged DNA and slow down aging. I do intermittent fasting on weekdays…not eating for 16 hours and as much as an entire day, and it’s a great energy booster. Weekends are harder since I am with the family all the time.

I still have a long way to go and need to get away from stress eating especially at night. I also don’t want to be “the guy” at dinner parties that nitpick on foods. It helps to build the reserves so I can enjoy food and wine/beer. I believe that unlocking the secrets of longevity will be tremendous to the quality of life, and in turn, helps build on the wealth we have created and compound them year after year. In closing, I would quote my partner Yan – “What you put in your body is like the investments in your portfolio”.
